Panthers District champs

The Mountain Grove Panthers captured the District Tournament with a 77-65 win over Licking in the championship contest.

Licking took a 27-23 first quarter lead, but Mountain Grove came back in the second period and went up 38-37 at halftime.

A big third quarter with the Panthers outscoring Licking, 22-9, allowed Mountain Grove to establish a margin and go on for the win.

Treye Collins led the Panther scoring with 19. Cade Coffman and Connor McNew had 17; Carter Otwell, 13; and Brock Coffman and Gavin Veach, 4.

The Panthers will now travel to Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla to face Southern Boone High School on Wednesday, March 1, at 6 p.m. Southern Boone had defeated Blair Oaks, 67-54 in their district championship.

Southern Boone comes into the game with a 24-3 record having fallen to Blair Oaks in an earlier game and Fulton and Helias Catholic.

The winner of the Mountain Grove-Southern Boone game will face the winner of the Fair Grove-Lamar matchup at the O’Reilly Family Event Center, Springfield, on March 4 at 5 p.m.

In the second round game of the District Tournament, Mountain Grove edged Conway, 63-62.

The teams played even in the first quarter and the Panthers held a 29-26 halftime edge, but Conway came back in the third quarter to take a 47-45 lead going into the final period.

Brock Coffman scored seven points in the final quarter to help Mountain Grove recover and take the win.

Coffman led the Panther scoring with 20. McNew had 14; Cade Coffman and Treye Collins, 10; Veach, 5; and Otwell, 4.
